I knew Fred pretty well in high school, and news of his passing comes as something of a shock. Though we had lost touch some time during his undergrad days at NYU, I kept a soft spot for him. We had differing social and political views, he being something of a leftist and I a much more conventional, even conservative guy. But we could share a laugh together, as he wished that the spirit of Howard Zinn (the far-left historian) might someday descend on me.
