So sorry I'm late to the party but my former email was hacked so I couldn't post until I was reregistered.

I am flattered that folks thought I was valedictorian but I wasn't, and I'm not sure one was ever announced? And Chris Pooley is correct - I opted to run for Class VP vs. Pres again to avoid arranging all the reunions, but Bruce dropped out - maybe as payback? Anyway, Ginny and the gang have done a great job after I moved to LA in keeping us engaged and setting up all our fun reunions. Have now been in DC/VA since 1990 for the World Cup, married an awesome UNC grad, and we have an amazing 16 year old HS junior. I stepped down last summer as CEO/Board director for a global sports software company (USOPC, Special Olympics, etc.) and am back consulting part-time and enjoying life - biking, Nantucket, selling our RE investments, et al.

Have stayed in touch with some of the NHS gang - Rich McM (swimming out at Burning Man?), Joe Martin, John Horn, et al, and really enjoyed catching up with everyone at our 50th. We have an awesome class! Enjoy some cooler weather (hopefully soon) and stay happy and healthy.

Burning Man? WTF!!! I'm too damned old for 'shrooms & mollies.

Even Zozobra burning here in Santa Fe is nuts. So, what did I do?

Flyfishing last weekend on the Quality Waters of the San Juan River. I had only two major decisions to make: black gnat or olive gnat. Yes, I caught over 10 monster trout 18-24" in size, & only monsters.

The brownies are stronger & will lunk when hooked. Then they take off like a bat outa hell & w/ POWER.

The bows act more like a teenager w/ ADD. Crazy ass movement, right-left-right, followed by a fierce head vibration.

I did land one cut-bow, which was my first.

My wife had the "pleasure" of staying home & harvesting our Seckel pears & Georgia Belle peaches. Yum! There's no comparing to placid & incipid store-bought fruit. Last of the fruit to be harvested will be a few Asian pears. The garden still is yielding tomatoes, zukes & cukes.

To answer Pauline not sure but it would maybe be too much fun. And don't know whrere or what.
i am pretty sure Rich Mcmanus has lead a way more risky life given his acomplished sailing adventures.

Pauline Harwood (Wright)

Yeah Carol, Rich has led the risky life! Nit up for burning man , I'm up for a beach party!

I saw what happened at the Burning Man event-crazy weather!  I thought of you Burning Man fans, and wondered if anyone made it.  Obviously, Rich did!

I was online the other day and saw the obituary of Greg McCabe.  He lived here in Falmouth, died beginning of Sept, I think.  He was in our class.  RIP Greg.

I like the idea of more frequent Reunions.  Maybe Destination events, I could arrange an event here in AZ, if people want to get out of the Cold in the winter.

I'm amazed at what I forgot about the Graduation, only memory is the rain.  Did we really have 600 people in the class.  BTW, I would not have pegged Clancy at top of class, I knew him too well as a coworker at Roche Brothers.

I don't think many of my ex-coworkers are on this site, but we had a Senior event ourselves, a big night out in Boston, dinner a Anthoney's Pier 4.  The other amazing event I recall from Senior year was the Senior dinner in Framingham, I was amazed with the singing and other talents the ladies demostrated on stage that night.

Rich McManus should call me next time he goes to Burning Man, I'll load up the RV and join him.

David Goethel

I've been blessed with a long and unique career, a degree in Biology from BU to the research dept at the New England Aquarium but never leaving my true passion, fishing.  Here I have chronicled my 55 years of life on the water in the Gulf of Maine, my research on deck and the ups and downs of fisheries management.  My book, "Endangered Species" was released yesterday and is available at local bookstores and online Amazon and Barnes and Noble in print, ebook and soon audio.  I hope that some of you will remember me from Needham High, Hillside Elementary and Neuman Jr. High and I think you will enjoy the chronicles.

Congratulations David.....you certainly have had  quite a career..... You must have some great stories.  Congrats too on the book...I'm sure the book would be a great read.

I do remember you from NHS.

Our classmate Rich McManus used to ply the waters of the eastern seaboard, up to Maine,  for years on his sailboat and none of us were quite sure what he was up to.  Did you or you agencies ever have any poaching or smuggling isssues with Rich or his boat?

thx

John Martin

Good morning David,
I am having difficulty placing a face with the name, but that is  not that unusual these days, Ha!  I will definitely pick up a copy of you book.  I'm a water baby, an aged one for sure, but I love all things related to boating.

My wife Debbie and I just spent the last 2.5 years refitting an old Grand Banks woodie.  Built in 1966 in HK, it eventually found its home here on Vancouver Island.   It was a mess when we took ownership, but now it's ready for another 50 plus years of use.  With the project completed and a year and a half of cruising under our belts we are in the process of selling it.  An American from Montana is buying the boat.  I didn't know they had deep water there.😎. The new owners plan to keep it moored here on the island and cruise the San Juan and Gulf Islands as we Canadians call them.

I must say, it seems you have had an full and interesting life, like many others from our graduating class.  It's been fun these last two years reconnecting with some of them.

I could go on and on talking about boats, but I need to get moving today.   Our boat is scheduled for a a haul out presale insurance inspection on Monday and there's a few things that need attending to.

Again, thanks for the heads up regarding your book.  It's definitely on my winter reading list.
Take care and be well,

Phil Hopfe

Michael Davis (Davis)

Dear David,

I'm very happy for you. I trust you assisted our striped bass population in its rebound.

I recall being a terrible brat towards you in junior high school. I was a mean spirited teenager. It was a difficult time in my life & I made it unfairly hard on others. I was too often a total a-hole.

BTW- that crap expression "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" by Nietzsche is just that... crap. I've served in the military & worked in all sorts of environments from corrections to healthcare clinics for the disadvantaged. We have far too many "walking wounded."

I'm happy for your successes. You certainly didn't need me in your life, especially in a formative youth. Sorry.

Congrats, Dave, on publishing the book, not to mention what sounds like a very interesting career. I look forward to reading about your accounts and learning a few things. BTW, who did you study under at BU?... I worked with Tom Kunz (the Bat Guy; RIP) but not until '93. Also, did you know Scott Kraus at the Aquarium? (A fellow COA grad.). -Bruce Hazam

Thomas Davis

Good morning, David (Goethel). That's a hell of an introduction in your new book! Not at all what I was perhaps expecting. But I look forward to reading how the story plays out once I pick up a copy. (Read the intro on the local library's app.) Congratulations, BYW, on its publishing.

Also loved the pic of you and your brother, I presume, with a fresh catch on the line. Just like I remember you back—way, way back—in the day at Hillside, et al. Hmmm, those memories promise to get my own brain working.

No book publishing credits on my CV. I instead thoroughly enjoyed a creative and rewarding career in the advertising, branding, design, and marketing communications biz. Was fortunate to meet and work with a vast array of clients representing fishing(!), running, and other consumer products, medical and healthcare, financial and investment services, legal, B2B, tech, and more. Every day was always new and different, which I thrived on.

Returned to the East Coast after 10 years in Southern California one year ago at this time. Now enjoying the slower life of semi-retirement down here in Stuart, FL. Fishing, golfing, swimming, painting, exploring, etc fill the days.

All the best to you and yours, Tom

Suzanne Pike (Seri)

Congrats, David , on your book!  I think I remember chatting with you at 1 of our reunions at the Sheraton.  Our fathers both had John Hancock connections, if I remember correctly.

Writing a book is no small task!  I know a few people personally here who have written books.  I've read one, need to buy another, and now we have you too.  I remember going fishing but the sitting still part was very challenging.  I got mosquito bites, no fish, my husband caught a boot...

I do enjoy eating fish, but not catching them.  2 of our neighbors occ show up at our house with fresh-caught striper.  Mostly in a black trash bag filled with ice.  Dror has taken over the kitchen as he's learned how to prepare it for cooking.  A very messy job but soooo worth it.

You and I both went to Newman before NHS.  I don't remember if we were in any classes together.  I was in 7-3 when we had the divisions.

Best of luck and congratulations again!

David,

I've started reading your book.  Great job!  As John Martin indicated, I too have been attracted to the sea.  As with yourself, it started in elementary school (Broadmeadow) when my dad bought a 21' gunter rigged, bilge keel, wooden sloop.  We kept it on a ball in Onset and eventually in a slip in Scituate.  He and I were sailing buds and spent many days on the water.  My wife and I have sailed extensively in the Pacific Northwest and made one cruise to Alaska and back.  Most recently we lived on a 38' Island Packet cutter sailing the East Coast from Maine to Florida and the Bahamas for about 6 years.  Good clean fun and many grand adventures…

Thanks for documenting your adventures, it makes great reading for someone who's also spent time on the water.

Rich McManus

David Goethel

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I'm pretty sure we spent free periods playing cards Sr year.

I am having a difficult time trying to answer everyone's individual posts about my book.  I can write, I just can't deal with computers.  At least I have moved on from sending messages with my homing pigeons!

I'd like to thank all of you for the kind words about my book.  I hope you all enjoy it.

In answer to some of your questions; I did know Tom Kunz at BU, he was my advisor and Scott Kraus was at the Aquarium while I was there but we didn't cross paths much.

Anyone down near Stuart, Florida this winter, I am hoping to do a couple book readings there.  Look me up if you are near there egoethel@comcast.net.

And Suzanne, yes I was in 7-3 with you seventh grade.

Hope to hear more from all of you,

David

FYI

2 gifts to myself as winter sets in just thought i would like to share.

The first is a book about the murderer of Holly Davidson one word... sad. RIP dear classmate Holly who was a lost soul.
Such a gripping crime story  to read about the ivestigation and conviction of Leonard Paradiso otherwise known as Lenny the "Quahog"also labeled "Bostons Unknown Serial killer". This book called "The Paradiso Files"A look inside the criminal justice system  and the prosecution of this horrible criminal by attorney Tim Burke (the father of my sons friend). Thank you Attorney Burke for your dedication.

who knew?

on a Happier note to read

You already know about the other book by David Goethel is so far spectacular. Maybe as a girl who spent summers visiting my grandmother in Nova Scotia this book was sure to hit home. Much of my time there was spent at the fishing piers. My Uncle Joe Greenwood out of Shag Harbor N.S. had a huge boat building business. Thanks David for a good read!

Happy New Year , Carol thanks so much for sharing the info on the Book regarding Hollys death. I worked with her at Birds Hill Pharmacy and was so taken aback when she was found murdered.   She ran with a tough crowd but was always so nice to me and to work with.   She was full of life....so very sad
